Professional photography is an investment that many are hesitant to pursue. There is a wide array of reasons as to why this may be the case. Money, purpose, and confusion on investment are just some reasons as to why that hesitation is present. These are all valid reasons; however, it is important to understand why photos are priced the way they are, and what the investment truly means.
Confronting Hesitations:
First, to know whether your investment in booking a professional photographer is worth it, it is necessary to confront any hesitations that may be preventing you from booking a photoshoot.
Three Hesitations that Prevent Booking a Professional Photoshoot:
- Money - Before booking with a professional photographer, it is important to know what your budget looks like. Different photographers offer different photography packages. This is where you can look at the overall or starting cost of the services that they offer. When looking for a photographer, try to be flexible with your budget. Look for the range of pricings an see what is best for you.
- Photography Purpose - Another hesitation that prevents photography bookings is that someone doesn't understand the purpose of booking a photographer. When you don't know what to book a photographer for, or why having your memories documented is important, booking a photoshoot may seem pointless. However, there are plenty of reasons to take professional photography, whether you have reached a goal, hit a life milestone, or want photos for wall hangings, cards, or photo albums.
- Confusion on Investment - When researching photographers, there is are different investment options depending on the photographer that may be confusing to someone unfamiliar with booking a photoshoot.
This blog will explain the differences in these hesitations, and can explain why utilizing professional photographers for your pictures in worth the price!
To start, think about why you are considering booking a professional photographer. Is it for graduation? Maternity? A wedding? You haven't taken photos in 5 years and you and your family look almost entirely different now? There are many different reasons as to why you want to book a photographer. But why book a professional and not just your friend with a smartphone camera?
5 Reasons a professional photographer is the best option for your photoshoot:
- A professional photographer understands photo composition - For those who don't know, photo composition is essentially the way the photo is laid out. Photographers practice getting those perfect angles, and one-of-a-kind shots through their experience and continuous dedication to their craft. It may not sound like a lot, but the difference between a photographer, and someone who just owns a camera is astounding when it comes to the composition of creating the perfect photo.
- A professional photographer understands how to work with different lighting - When you have taken a photo have you ever noticed a harsh glare? That your skin may be washed out? That the lighting where you are at is an awful contrast against what you look like? A professional photographer is knowledgeable about how different lighting affects their clients. What can not be fixed during the shoot, can be fixed afterwards. Someone with less experience may have a misunderstanding as to what to do to make everyone in the photo look their best. A lack of understanding of color theory/ undertones in skin can cause your memories to look sickly, rather than lively.
- A photographer knows locations based on your vision - This one may not seem like a lot, but as a photographer the act of finding beautiful locations for a photoshoot is an art within itself. If you have a place in mind that's great! But for those who only have an idea and don't know how to execute it, the photographer can help you - even more than a website can. A photographer will consider the little details involved with picking a location. Is the location free? Is there a high volume of other people taking photos? What is the best time of day? What will this location look like when sending out the final gallery? These are questions the professionals worry about, so you don't have to. Your idea and vision is executed without the stress of doing all of the research yourself.
- Your investment will last a lifetime - Understandably, photography is a costly investment. And the act of spending the amount of money your photographer is asking may seem like a waste if you don't understand the investment you are making. A lot of photography investment packages may seem confusing and irrelevant to you. But when you think about it, you are signing up not only to take pictures but to make memories that will be eternalized. You are not just paying for Instagrammable content, but you are purchasing a carefully curated vision and look into your life. Whether the photos are candid or posed, you sought a photographer with the intention of capturing a beautiful memory to keep with you for the rest of your life.
- Your photos will have a purpose - When booking professional photography for what feels like there is no reason, a professional photographer will capture the purpose you may not know yet. Taking portraits provides the purpose of feeling beautiful and confident, couples photos show you how in love you are. These are not just silly photos for the sake of it. They are established memories that will last a lifetime. The purpose is to remember the joy and love that you are embracing with each pose and shutter click.
What You Get From a Professional Photoshoot With Me
As a photographer myself I would obviously love that if anyone who is reading this takes the time to book with me, which is why I will go over what you receive when you book a photoshoot-only package with me.
For starters, the photoshoot only package is an option as I am an artist and I love to create art from my photoshoot sessions. So when you book for only a photoshoot, you will not receive a custom art piece from your purchase. However you still receive a lot of beautiful, thought-out work.
So, what does each term mean?
In each package I offer how much time you are spending with me during the shoot. This is a time limit I set because it lets me know about how many photos you will receive back from a shoot with me.
I also include the amount of locations and outfits you get with the package. The more time, the more opportunities for walking around, and outfit changes for more variety during your shoot.
Lastly the amount of edited photos you receive back, the online gallery, and printing rights release. When taking professional photos the photos you get back are edited. This is because photographers shoot in what is known as "RAW." These photos may need touch ups from people in the background, some quick lighting changes, or artistic choices from the photographer. In my case I prefer to take a lot of photos that may look similar and provide some in my style, some black and white, and some with an artistic touch (as can be seen on my Instagram and my portfolio).
The online gallery is through a platform I use called Unscripted Photographers. This platform is also where you will fill out a questionnaire and your invoice when you book with me. It keeps everything in one nice spot for you to continue to find and look at forever.
Lastly, your printing rights release. This one seems to confuse some people, so I am going to explain it in simple terms. The photographer you hire is taking photos, therefore they own the copyright of the photos they are taking. Through the contract that you sign, you are saying that it is okay to post these photos for their own marketing, or that you are not okay with the photographer using your photos. You are also receiving the photos with permission to post for your own purpose. You can print the photographer's work, post it, and use it for the purpose you intend to. For my business all I require is that if you post photos I took of you, I am tagged in the photos as the photographer.
Overall, these are some reasons as to why you should book a professional photographer, and what I offer you with my photoshoot-only option. Remember that photography is an incredible investment that an chang your life, and be around for life.
